Matt was raised on a produce farm in Western New York. Earning his BS in Food Science at Cornell University (’05), Matt completed 3 internships with Anheuser-Busch focused on brewing, malting, and milling. He was commissioned through Cornell University’s ROTC program as an officer in the Army National Guard. While working on his Master’s Degree in Animal Science at University of Idaho (’09), he deployed to Afghanistan mentoring a company of Afghan National Army soldiers. His MS research projects on dairy cattle nutrition focused on reducing ammonia emissions from manure were completed after returning from the deployment.  Beginning in 2009, Matt worked for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service coordinating food safety outreach programs. Programs focused on food defense, food safety for home based food processors, and advising manufacturers on FDA regulations.  Currently pursuing his Doctorate in Agricultural and Extension Education at North Carolina State University, his dissertation research will focus on the role of agricultural extension in stability operations – activities to maintain or reestablish safety, security, infrastructure, and essential governmental services in unstable nations.
