Scott Maitland is the founder of Top of the Hill Restaurant, Brewery and Distillery. He began the brewery in 1996 to prevent a chain restaurant from dominating downtown Chapel Hill. Being in the brewpub business in Chapel Hill gave him a real appreciation for the impact locally based organizations have on a community and the need to create stronger local economies. This propelled his interest in entrepreneurship of the non-ipo variety and ultimately inspired the creation of Top of the Hill Distillery and TOPO Organic Spirits - world class spirits from only local, organic agricultural products. TOPO Organic Spirits are now available in North Carolina ABC stores and 11 other states. Scott is a 1995 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law and an adjunct professor in Entrepreneurial Studies at UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School.
